COMRES/ ITV NEWS POLL: 47% OF POPULATION THINK UK HAS CHANGED FOR WORSE DURING THE QUEEN’S REIGN
As the nation prepares to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the latest Index poll results, conducted by ComRes and to be broadcast on ITV News at Ten tonight, reveal that nearly half (47%) of the population believe that Britain has changed for the worse during her 60 year reign. Just over one in four (27%) believe it has changed for the better, one in five (20%) say it hasn’t changed for the better nor for the worse and 6% do not know.
Asked if the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will be good for the UK economy, 65% agree, 17% disagree that it will be good for the economy and 19% are not sure. These figures are similar to results from April 2011, when the same question was asked about the Royal Wedding’s effect on the economy. Then, 64% agreed, 19% disagreed and 17% were unsure.
80% of the public believe the Diamond Jubilee contributes to Britain’s reputation as a country with its own distinct character. 11% disagree and just 9% are not sure. This figure has increased from 74% who agreed when asked the same question at the time of the Royal Wedding in April 2011.
Nearly half (46%) say they will watch the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee live on TV, compared to 38% who said they would watch the Royal Wedding in April last year. 37% say they do not intend to watch the Jubilee and 17% are not sure.
More than half (52%) disagree that they intent to go to a Diamond Jubilee street party or other celebration over the weekend, which has dropped from 78% when asked at the time of the Royal Wedding. 27% say they do intend to go to a Diamond Jubilee street party this year and 20% do not know.
While 24% say they will make a deliberate effort to avoid the events and coverage of the Diamond Jubilee, 63% disagree and 13% do not know.
The majority of people, 56%, say that Queen Elizabeth II is one of the greatest monarchs that Great Britain has ever had. Just one in five disagree with 19% and 25% do not know. 29% believe she is a good monarch but not one of the greatest.
Finally, just 14% oppose Great Britain having a monarchy while a large majority of 71% do not agree with this.
Methodology: ComRes interviewed 2,056 GB adults online from 25th to 28th May 2012. Data were weighted to be demographically representative of all GB adults. ComRes is a member of the British Polling Council and abides by its rules.
